My only sibling, Kristel (Christine) was born in 1934, almost 10 years before
I came along. Her idyllic life with my parents came to an abrupt end
when the war started and my father was drafted into the German Army.
My Mother, Sister and I left our Berlin home in 1944 and were evacuated
to East Prussia until the close of the war.
My sister, along with my mother suffered much at the hands of the Russian
conquerors and my sister left for the US in 1954 and never returned, even
for a visit.
She married married Mike Pfaff shortly after arriving in Chicago. They
met while he was stationed in Berlin as part of the occupation army.
The rest of our family followed in 1958 and lived with my sister and brother-in-law
for a while before we settled into our own apartment. My sister
and brother-in-law moved to California in 1959 where they started a furniture
business that prospered until her death in 2005.
My sister had the responsibility of taking care of me for much of the time
after the war until my Father returned in 1950. My Mother was busy
trying to provide for us and was gone quite a bit. I went
to school with my sister, sat in her classroom and even joined her for her
class outing. What
a pain it must have been to have me tagging along everywhere. It wasn't
much fun for me either.
